Biography

Carlos is a visual artist who works in a contemporary narrative manner. Contemporary narrative art.

Carlos lived and worked in Suriname and the Netherlands (Rotterdam). In 2009 Blaaker moves to Curaçao where he will focus on making sculptures in bronze, polyurethane, steel, polyester and wood. “I want to bring painting and sculpting together, so that a painting could also become a three-dimensional thing and vice versa. These are attempts to break down the fence between sculpture and painting. I actually want to elevate the images.”

Blaaker wants to tell a story with his art and often shows ordinary people who live in his neighbourhood. Blaaker’s muses are the people in his neighborhood that he sees around him every day: people from the LGBTIQ+ community, immigrants, the homeless. Recognizable types that you could encounter on the streets all over the world. At first glance, the models seem literally imagined, but beneath the realistic surface of style lies a story through the context in which they are placed. This transcends the literal nature and gives the works a certain layering from which they derive their meaning. However, the interpretation of the artwork is up to the viewer. “I am a storyteller in my work,” explains the artist. Through his art Blaaker makes visible the ‘invisibles’ from society. He does not shy away from criticizing society.
